VITI1: Grape Mapping

VITI1 is the first step in the American Sommelier academic series. Each of the ten classes focuses on a grape variety or blends depending on the region. Students learn to compare and contrast different varieties in addition to different expressions of the same variety. Review of wine in history, climate, soil, geography, laws, wine making and grape growing.

  3. Chardonnay
  4. Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends
  5. Sauvignon Blanc and Blends
  6. Grenache, Syrah, Tempranillo
  7. Riesling
  8. Chenin Blanc and Pinot Gris
  9. Sangiovese and Nebbiolo
  10. Champagne and Sparkling

Assignments

  • Simple weekly homework projects
  • Weekly 15- 25 minute online quizzes
  • One 90-minute final exam

Prerequisites

While it helps to have a Foundation of knowledge, there are no strict prerequisites for this class. Beginners committed to working hard are welcome to enroll.

Goals

Graduating students should:

  • Have a global understanding of how the vineyard environment impacts the resulting wine
  • Understand and be able to identify differentiating characteristics of Old World and New World styles
  • Be comfortable comparing/contrasting theory and characteristics of the benchmark styles of 12 grape varieties
  • Have an understanding of how grapes are grown and wine is made
  • Have profound confidence in tasting and analysis procedures
